National Custodian Day

Around October the 2nd, thousands of schools around the world came together to celebrate National Custodian Day. This national holiday encourages the appreciation of school staff members who keep the schools around the world clean. As a member of the journalism class, it soon became clear my task was to discover and meet Mooreville High School’s very own custodian. On this objective I decided to team up with Leigh, another member of the journalism class. Together we would interview and meet one of the most interesting school staff members and open our eyes to the works of school management.

Ms.Green can be seen all over the high school. From the band hall to the parking lot, she is always keeping herself busy. People see her daily, but few have actually met her. This made it extremely hard to track her down. However, with the help of Mrs.Cardenas, one of the school’s counselors, we finally came face to face with Ms.Green. We quickly explained the situation to Ms.Green and she seemed very understanding. She decided to sit down next to Leigh. I noticed that Ms.Green seemed a little shy towards us. However, after Leigh began questioning her, she truly showed her spirit.

Ms.Green is new to Mooreville High School. Before coming here Ms.Green was a cook at the Plantersville High School cafeteria. She was told by one of her friends about a new job opportunity at Mooreville High School. Ms.Green immediately knew the job would be “perfect” for her by stating, “I didn’t like what I was doing, so I immediately transferred.” Being closer to home and family, Ms.Green headed towards the new job and a whole new environment. Here she faced new circumstances but managed to fall in “love” with her new job. She explained, “You know I just love working here because I can be all over. I don’t have to be in one confined area like I was. I can be all over the school cleaning and doing what needs to be done.” With over 9 years of school employment, Ms.Green has no plan on slowing down.

During the interview, Ms.Green made one thing clear about herself: family is important to her. Not only did she transfer jobs for the work, but she did it to be closer to home. As a proud grandmother, Ms.Green’s granddaughter is currently enrolled at the Mooreville Elementary School. Being able to work across the road from her granddaughter adds a sense of comfort to Ms.Green’s day which allows her to become the best version of herself at work. Outside of work, Ms.Green can always be found with her family. When asked what her favorite holiday is, she instantly responds with “Christmas.” Christmas allows her to bring her whole family together and bond with them. It is very clear that Ms.Green’s inspiration and joy is derived from her simple yet fascinating family life. She is truly a family woman.

As a Mooreville student myself, I am a witness to students’ dirtiness. That is why I felt it was important for our meeting with Ms.Green to open our eyes to problems within our schools. Putting a personality behind the school’s Custodian could possibly make students think twice about dropping that piece of trash in the hallway. Luckily, Ms.Green had little criticism for students. However, one of her main concerns was students’ incapability of flushing the toilets. She expressed her discomfort, “It is really simple yet we have many who do not do it– love our school.” Another huge issue Ms.Green opened up about is the vandalization of bathrooms. Recently, social media has had a viral “challenge” circulate the media. The objective is for students to steal and destroy items in school. Unfortunately, Mooreville High school’s bathrooms have been affected by these trends. Ms.Green stated,” If you don’t do it at home why come here and do it? Treat our school with respect.” No one could have said it better. Mooreville High School is a home for many people and when students vandalize or mistreat the school it affects not only the staff members but the students. Mooreville allows students to have many freedoms, but I am afraid that these trends may cause the school to take some freedoms away in order to ensure school safety. So next time you see a piece of trash on the floor, pick it up not just for the school but also for Ms.Green.
