The Evolution of Mooreville High School

As a student of Mooreville High School for the last few years I have seen the school undergo many new changes. From the new playground at the elementary school to the construction of the computer building in the middle school. More recently, we have seen small yet impactful changes made to the overall perimeter of the schools.

During my freshman year, 4 years ago, school was, overall, different. Students had a lot more freedom. Many would enter the school, leave, or hop classes. However, with the new year came a lot of new changes. Students started skipping class, fights broke out often, and people began doing illegal things in bathrooms. FInally, a breaking point happened. Someone threatened the school and Mooreville proceeded to go into lockdown. For many this was unexpected. It was almost unheard of for someone to threaten a school around these parts. However, this threat scared many students and raised the eyebrows of many school officials. Moving forward things would be changing.

Almost immediately, the school invested into new locking mechanisms. In order to enter the school you had to have a keycard or be let in by a school official. The other way in would be through the main office which also stayed locked. You would then have to stare into a camera and press a button. The office clerk would then let you in. These new changes irritated many as some were locked out of the school. However, this would not be the greatest change added.

The school then proceeded to take school break away. Normally, students would have about a fifteen minute break away from class. Now they could only simply purchase food and then head straight to class. Students complained about the new changes, many furious. However, it can be argued that they brought this onto themselves.

This year many new changes have appeared once again. The school is building a fence connecting the middle school and high school. This fence is being paid by the district as a part of school safety. According to Mr.Lindsey, the principal, Lee County Schools hired a consulting firm years ago in order to ensure the safety of students. These are the people who implemented the door badges and the ones who recommend the new fence. The new fence will be used in case the school goes into a lockdown. It will make directing student traffic easier and create a barrier for intruders. Once the fence is completed, it will be interesting to see the students’ response.

In today’s modern world, it seems most schools are preoccupied with ensuring the safety of their students. Overall, these new changes will merely be an inconvenience for students, but it will provide comfort and overall security needed for them to focus on school. It will be interesting to see the steps Mooreville will take in the future.
